The April showers are just around the corner....
My friends and I stood at the classroom window, pressing our little noses against the glass-praying for a break in those big, nasty clouds that poured the rain down on our playground. This is of course where we learned the little rhyme, "April showers bring May flowers." I'm not so sure we wanted flowers as much as we wanted slides and swings.
The little rhyme can be traced all the way back to the 1500's--and some speculate it could go back even farther. In 1557, Mr. Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings called: A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry. His April compilation included:

A gentle reminder to us all that our days of looming clouds, thunderstorms and of course, 'humidity hair,' will yield us brighter days and sweeter things just around the corner!
It's hard to believe the spring showers are just around the corner. But, there's no reason to "frump." A few rainy day staples will get you through the showers and enjoying the May flowers in no-time!

Monogram Monday
Monograms originated as a form of royal signature. Long ago, the Greeks and Romans used monograms on their coins as a way to identify their rulers. Over time, artisans began to utilized monograms as a 'short-hand' way to identify their work.
The Victorian era ushered in a period of high-class society members using the monogram as a means to identify their place in society. The rules of monogram use were strict, simple and few. Female monograms used the initial of the first name on the left, the initial of the middle name on the right and the initial of the last name placed larger in the middle.
Today, monograms can be found on almost anything from towels and linens to hats, clothing, plates and tumblers. Monogrammed gifts provide a personal touch for any occasion. The rules of monogramming have also become more relaxed. Today the Victorian style of monogram still uses three letters-your first inital on the left, middle initial on the right and last name initial in the center. If using the Victorian style when married, place the groom or husbands inital on the left, bride or wife on the right and the sirname or last name in the center. Typically, a married woman will use her maiden name initial in place of her middle name in the monogram.
While the Victorian style "rules" simply serve as guidelines, the general rule should be to choose your favorite way of monogramming and stick to it. I personally know how each of my friends prefer their items to be monogrammed--whether they use their maiden names or middle names or if they prefer a three-letter monogram or a single initial. For those that prefer single initials, I try to keep note of whether they prefer to use their first initial or their initial of their last name.
